The journey
Death (mawt) is not the end of the soul — it is a passage. Every soul will taste it, and each is returned to Allah for the reckoning.
كُلُّ نَفْسٍ ذَآئِقَةُ ٱلْمَوْتِ ۗ وَإِنَّمَا تُوَفَّوْنَ أُجُورَكُمْ يَوْمَ ٱلْقِيَـٰمَةِ
Kullu nafsin dhā'iqatul-mawt, wa innamā tuwaffawna ujūrakum yawmal-qiyāmah
"Every soul will taste death, and you will only be paid your full compensation on the Day of Resurrection."

Signs the soul is departing (from the Sunnah)
- The gaze follows the soul as it is drawn out — the eyes may fix upwards.
- Cold begins at the extremities and moves inward.
- The tongue softens; breathing becomes shallow and rattled.
The Angel of Death (Malak al-Mawt), assisted by other angels, is sent to take the soul. For the believer he comes with mercy; for the wrongdoer with severity.
قُلْ يَتَوَفَّىٰكُم مَّلَكُ ٱلْمَوْتِ ٱلَّذِى وُكِّلَ بِكُمْ ثُمَّ إِلَىٰ رَبِّكُمْ تُرْجَعُونَ
"Say: The angel of death, who has been entrusted with you, will take your souls; then to your Lord you will be returned."

The last words — Shahādah
The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Whoever's last words are Lā ilāha illa'Llāh will enter Paradise.' Abū Dāwūd (3116) — Sahīh. Gently prompt (talqīn) the dying to say the Shahādah without pressing them.
What the family should do
- Prompt the Shahādah softly; do not command it.
- Turn the dying person towards the qiblah if possible.
- Close the eyes, cover the body, and say: Innā li'Llāhi wa innā ilayhi rāji'ūn.
- Hasten the ghusl, kafan (shrouding), Salātul-Janāzah, and burial.
- Settle their debts, fulfil their wasiyyah (bequest within one-third).
- Avoid wailing, tearing clothes, or striking the cheeks — forbidden in the Sunnah (Bukhārī 1294).
