What is Islam?
Islam is the timeless message that every Prophet — from Adam to Muhammad ﷺ — brought: worship the One Creator alone, live with justice and mercy, and prepare for the life to come.
A Muslim is anyone who accepts this message. Muslims come from every race, country, and background — united by one God, one final Book (the Qur'an), and one final Messenger (Muhammad ﷺ).
The Six Beliefs (Īmān)
One God (Tawḥīd)
Allah is One — without partner, image, or equal. He alone deserves worship. (Qur'an 112:1-4)
Angels
Created from light, obedient servants of Allah who carry out His command.
Revealed Books
The Torah, Zabur (Psalms), Injīl (Gospel) and — final and preserved — the Qur'an.
Prophets
From Adam ﷺ to Muhammad ﷺ — including Nūḥ, Ibrāhīm, Mūsā, and ‘Īsā (Jesus), peace be upon them all.
The Last Day
Every soul will be resurrected and held to account. Paradise (Jannah) and Hellfire (Jahannam) are real.
Divine Decree (Qadar)
Nothing happens except by Allah's knowledge, will, and wisdom — while we remain responsible for our choices.
The Five Pillars of Islam
Shahādah
— Testimony of faith
Belief in One God and the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
Ṣalāh
— Five daily prayers
Fajr, Dhuhr, ‘Asr, Maghrib, ‘Ishā.
Zakāh
— Purifying charity
2.5% of yearly savings for the poor.
Ṣawm
— Fasting Ramadan
Dawn to sunset, once a year.
Ḥajj
— Pilgrimage to Makkah
Once in a lifetime if able.

Take your time — and don't wait too long
Islam is a lifelong journey; you don't need to know everything to enter. But once your heart is convinced, don't delay — the reward is immense and the past is wiped clean upon accepting Islam.

The Shahādah — Testimony of Faith
These are the words that carry a soul into Islam. Say them with belief, and you are a Muslim.
أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا اللَّهُ، وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ
Ash-hadu an lā ilāha illa-llāh, wa ash-hadu anna Muḥammadan rasūlu-llāh
I bear witness that there is no god worthy of worship except Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.
How to Take Your Shahādah

Perform ghusl (a full bath) if possible — a symbolic fresh start. If not possible right now, that's okay.

Face the Qiblah (direction of Makkah) if you know it — it isn't required, but it's beautiful.

With sincerity in the heart and understanding of its meaning, say the Shahādah aloud — in Arabic if you can, otherwise in your own language.

It is recommended (but not required) to say it in front of two Muslim witnesses, so your community can celebrate and support you.

The moment you say it sincerely, you are a Muslim — and every past sin is forgiven, as the Prophet ﷺ said: "Islam wipes out what came before it." (Muslim)
After the Shahādah — Your First Steps
Ghusl (Full purification)
Take a full bath with the intention of purifying yourself as a new Muslim. This marks a clean, fresh beginning.
Learn Wuḍū and start Ṣalāh
Learn the ablution and the five daily prayers. Start with what you can — even one prayer today is better than waiting until you know everything.
Learn short surahs
Begin with Al-Fātiḥah (essential for prayer), then Al-Ikhlāṣ, Al-Falaq, and An-Nās.
Choose good company
Surround yourself with practicing Muslims who will encourage you gently, without pressure or judgement.
Learn gradually
Halal food, modesty, dhikr, fasting, zakāh — you don't need to change everything overnight. Islam was revealed over 23 years for a reason.
Keep the connection
Read Qur'an daily — even one verse. Make du‘ā in your own language. Allah understands every heart.
Beautiful Du‘ās for the Journey
اللَّهُمَّ اهْدِنِي وَسَدِّدْنِي
Allāhumma-hdinī wa saddidnī
O Allah, guide me and make me steadfast.
بِسْمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحْمَٰنِ الرَّحِيمِ
Bismillāhi-r-Raḥmāni-r-Raḥīm
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
يَا مُقَلِّبَ الْقُلُوبِ ثَبِّتْ قَلْبِي عَلَىٰ دِينِكَ
Yā muqallibal-qulūb, thabbit qalbī ‘alā dīnik
O Turner of the hearts, keep my heart firm upon Your religion. (Tirmidhi)
Common Questions
Do I need to change my name?
No. Keep your name unless it carries a meaning that contradicts Islam (e.g. servant of another deity). The Prophet ﷺ only changed names when the meaning was problematic.
What if I sin after becoming Muslim?
Sincere repentance (tawbah) erases sin. Allah says He is more merciful to His servant than a mother to her child. Turn back to Him whenever you slip.
Do I have to tell my family right away?
Not necessarily. Use wisdom. Your faith is between you and Allah first. Choose the right time, be kind, and pray for them.
Is it hard?
It becomes easier with practice. Start small, stay consistent. "The most beloved deeds to Allah are those done consistently, even if small." (Bukhari & Muslim)
What about my past?
It is completely forgiven the moment you accept Islam — a gift the Prophet ﷺ personally described. You begin with a clean record.
