Preparation & Ghusl

Before travelling to the Miqat, prepare yourself physically and spiritually.

  • Perform a full ghusl (ritual bath). If not possible, perform wudu.
  • Trim nails, remove any unwanted hair, and apply perfume to the body (not the Ihram cloth).
  • Men wear the two white Ihram sheets: izar (lower) and rida (upper). No stitched clothing, no head covering.
  • Women wear any modest, loose clothing. The face and hands must remain uncovered (no niqab or gloves).
  • Pray two rak'ahs with the intention of Sunnah of Ihram (or any obligatory prayer if it is time).

💡 Ghusl and perfume are Sunnah; the Ihram garments are essential.

Niyyah for Umrah

النية

At or before crossing the Miqat, make the intention for Umrah in your heart and say aloud:

  • From this moment you are in the state of Ihram — the restrictions apply.
  • If you fear you may not be able to complete Umrah, add: ‘If anything prevents me, my place is where You hold me back.’

Recite

Labbayka Allahumma 'Umrah

"Here I am, O Allah, for Umrah."

Recite the Talbiyah

Immediately after the niyyah, begin reciting the Talbiyah loudly (men) or softly (women). Continue reciting frequently until you reach the Ka'bah and begin Tawaf.

  • Ihram restrictions now in force: no cutting hair or nails, no perfume, no intimate relations, no hunting, no arguments, no covering the head (men) or face (women).

Recite

"Here I am, O Allah, here I am. Here I am, You have no partner, here I am. Truly all praise, favour and sovereignty belong to You. You have no partner."

Entering Masjid al-Haram

On arriving at the sacred mosque, enter with the right foot and recite the du'a of entry.

  • Stop the Talbiyah when your eyes fall upon the Ka'bah, and make sincere du'a — this is a moment of accepted supplication.

Recite

Bismillah, was-salatu was-salamu 'ala Rasulillah. Allahumma iftah li abwaba rahmatik

"In the name of Allah, and peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah. O Allah, open the doors of Your mercy for me."

Tawaf — 7 circuits of the Ka'bah

Walk seven times around the Ka'bah in an anti-clockwise direction, keeping the Ka'bah on your left.

  • Men uncover the right shoulder (Idtiba') by placing the rida under the right armpit for the whole Tawaf.
  • Start at the Black Stone (Hajar al-Aswad). Face it, raise the right hand and say ‘Bismillahi Allahu Akbar’ — kiss it if possible, or touch it, or point to it from a distance.
  • Men do Raml (a light, quick walk) in the first three circuits; walk normally in the last four. Women walk normally throughout.
  • Each circuit ends back at the Black Stone — that counts as one. Repeat until seven are complete.
  • There is no fixed du'a for Tawaf — recite Qur'an, dhikr, or make du'a in your own language.
  • When passing between the Yemeni Corner (Rukn al-Yamani) and the Black Stone, recite: ‘Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanah wa fil-akhirati hasanah wa qina 'adhab an-nar.’

Recite

Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanatan wa fil-akhirati hasanatan wa qina 'adhaban-nar

"Our Lord, give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and save us from the punishment of the Fire."

Two rak'ahs behind Maqam Ibrahim

After completing seven circuits, cover the right shoulder and go to the Station of Ibrahim.

  • Pray two short rak'ahs behind Maqam Ibrahim if possible; otherwise anywhere in the mosque.
  • In the first rak'ah, after al-Fatiha, recite Surah al-Kafirun.
  • In the second rak'ah, after al-Fatiha, recite Surah al-Ikhlas.
  • Then drink Zamzam water — facing the Qiblah, in three breaths, and make du'a.

Return to the Black Stone

Before starting Sa'i, return to the Black Stone and salute it once more if easy — say ‘Bismillahi Allahu Akbar’ and point to it. This is Sunnah, not obligatory.

  • Then head towards the hill of Safa to begin Sa'i.

Sa'i — 7 trips between Safa & Marwah

السعي

As you approach Safa, recite the verse of Safa & Marwah, then climb it.

  • Climb Safa, face the Ka'bah, raise your hands and say ‘Allahu Akbar’ three times, then recite: ‘La ilaha illallah wahdahu la sharika lah, lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamd, wa huwa 'ala kulli shay'in qadeer. Repeat this three times, making du'a in between.
  • Walk down to Marwah. Between the two green markers, men jog briskly (women walk normally).
  • On reaching Marwah, do exactly as you did on Safa — face the Qiblah, takbir three times, then the du'a and personal supplications.
  • Safa → Marwah counts as ONE trip. Marwah → Safa is the second. Continue until you have completed SEVEN trips, ending on Marwah.

Recite

Innas-Safa wal-Marwata min sha'a'irillah. Abda'u bima bada'allahu bih

"Indeed, Safa and Marwah are among the symbols of Allah. I begin with what Allah began with."

Halq or Taqsir — shave or trim

This ends the state of Ihram.

  • Men: shave the entire head (Halq — more rewarded) or trim from all sides (Taqsir).
  • Women: gather the hair and cut a fingertip's length from the ends. Women do NOT shave.
10

Tahallul — Umrah complete

You are now released from Ihram. The restrictions are lifted and your Umrah is complete.

  • Change into your regular clothes.
  • Thank Allah — an accepted Umrah has no reward less than Paradise.
  • If you wish, perform another Tawaf (Tawaf an-Nafl) any time you are in Makkah — this is highly recommended.

Recite

Alhamdu lillahil-ladhi bi ni'matihi tatimmus-salihat

"All praise is for Allah, by whose favour all good deeds are completed."
