Understand first

What is Zakat?

Zakat is an obligatory annual charity — not a donation, but a right that the poor hold over surplus wealth. Every sane, adult Muslim who has owned wealth equal to or above the Nisab for one full lunar year (the hawl) pays 2.5% of their net zakatable wealth.

Who pays

Adult Muslims — men and women — whose net wealth reaches the Nisab and stays there for a lunar year.

When

On your own Zakat anniversary each lunar year. Many choose Ramadan for the extra reward.

What falls under Zakat

Zakatable vs exempt

Counts towards Zakat

  • Cash — in hand, in the bank, or held digitally
  • Gold and silver, whether jewellery, coins or bullion
  • Shares, funds, crypto and accessible pension savings
  • Business stock and trade goods held for resale
  • Loans you have given that you expect to recover
  • Rental and business income sitting in your accounts

Generally exempt

  • Your home, furniture, clothing and personal effects
  • The car you drive and tools of your trade
  • Property you live in or use, rather than trade
  • Diamonds and gemstones for personal use (per most scholars)
  • Wealth below the Nisab after a full lunar year
  • Money you owe that is already due for payment
