Laylatul Qadr

The Night of Decree — better than a thousand months

Laylatul Qadr

لَيْلَةُ الْقَدْرِ

Time

One of the odd nights of the last ten of Ramadan (21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th, 29th) — the 27th is most emphasized.

Rak'ahs

As many nafl as possible, in pairs of two, along with Qur'an, du'a and dhikr

Overview

‘We revealed it in the Night of Decree. And what will make you know what the Night of Decree is? The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months.’ (Surah al-Qadr)

Virtue

"‘Whoever stands in prayer on Laylatul Qadr out of faith and hope of reward, all his previous sins are forgiven.’ (Bukhari & Muslim)"

How to perform

1

Perform i'tikaf if you can, or at least stay in the mosque or in worship after Isha.

2

Pray Isha and Taraweeh in congregation — this counts as ‘standing the night’ if completed with the imam.

3

Then pray Qiyam-ul-Layl: units of two rak'ahs each, as many as you are able, with long recitation.

4

Recite the Qur'an — especially Surah al-Baqarah, al-Mulk, and short surahs like al-Ikhlas repeatedly.

5

Make abundant istighfar and du'a. Aisha (RA) asked what to say on this night — the answer is the du'a below.

6

Give sadaqah — every good deed on this night is multiplied.

7

End with Witr, then remain in dhikr until Suhoor and Fajr.

The Du'a of Laylatul Qadr

اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّكَ عَفُوٌّ تُحِبُّ الْعَفْوَ فَاعْفُ عَنِّي

Allahumma innaka 'Afuwwun tuhibbul-'afwa fa'fu 'anni

"O Allah, You are the Most Forgiving, and You love forgiveness, so forgive me."

Notes

  • 💡 Signs the next morning: the sun rises without strong rays, calm and bright.
  • 💡 Do not fixate on ‘which night’ — pursue all the odd nights.
