All 28 letters in every position
In Arabic, most letters change shape depending on where they sit in a word — isolated, at the start, in the middle, or at the end. Study every letter in all four forms until you can recognise them at a glance. Six letters (ا د ذ ر ز و) never connect to the letter after them, so their initial and medial shapes look like the isolated form.

Non-connecting letters (ا د ذ ر ز و) keep the same shape at the start and middle because they do not join the next letter.
